Summer Internship
Will Forage for Food, in Grass Lake, MI, is looking for 1-3 summer interns who would like to learn about homesteading, foraging, and self-sufficiency. These are unpaid positions. Interns will work 1-2 days per week in exchange for knowledge and experience. Start and end dates are negotiable. Willing to work with your schedule and focus on your personal goals and interests. Duties may include:
- Harvesting wild and farmed foods: gathering greens, picking fruits, cutting mushrooms…
- Cleaning and preserving the harvest: washing and cutting produce, drying, fermenting, canning, freezing…
- Maintaining equipment and work areas: cleaning and putting away tools, washing dishes, sweeping…
- Maintaining gardens, mushroom beds, and edible habitats: planting seeds, weeding, watering…
- Handcrafting and bushcrafting: working with hand tools, fire making, hide tanning, mat making, basic sewing…
- Helping with classes and events: Packing and unpacking equipment, organizing class materials…
- Assisting with website, Meetup, and Facebook posts: Uploading and organizing photos, creating ads and flyers, copying/sharing blog posts and event announcements…
Requirements:
- Must have the ability to follow instructions. Common sense wouldn’t hurt, either.
- Must be dependable and have reliable communication and transportation.
- Must be physically able to walk for long distances on rough terrain, carry up to 40 pounds for short distances, bend, kneel, sit on the ground, and work with your hands for long periods.
- Previous gardening or foraging experience, kitchen skills, outdoor skills, and/or proficiency with Word and social media helpful, but not necessary.
- You will get dirty. You will get scratches and bruises. You will get bit by mosquitoes. You will encounter poison ivy. You will most likely get both sunburned and soaking wet. And you will probably encounter ticks, snakes, and wasps.
